“I want to record an album before I turn 30. This album represents the journey I’ve with the saxophone and music for the past 3 decades. These music captures the mood, and the sonic dreams I had. Perhaps melodic, perhaps rhythmic, perhaps none of them. The primary goal is to encourage myself, as well as many great emerging artist out there, to put out a even better second, third, fifth, ninth album. But first, we need the debut album. I remember Jason told me, ‘this is not a summary; this is a journey.’ The recording sessions happened during the spring and summer of 2021, right before I started my DMA program at the Arizona State University. It was a difficult time because of various reason. Yet during the process, I grew a lot, learnt a lot, and made lots of friends. What’s left to complain?”
In this debut album of classical saxophone music, Calvin Wong explore original repertoire and arrangements that were originally for other instruments. The way the repertoire is organized outline a new landscape for classical music. This is never a genre just about the history, but about the future, the vision as well.
